Some 26,695 rape cases have been filed with police stations across the country in last five years.
A report submitted by police to the High Court (HC) on Wednesday revealed the grim picture.
Deputy attorney general Nowroz Russell Chowdhury and assistant attorney general MMG Sarwar submitted the report on behalf of the IGP.
The report said some 4,331 rape cases were filed across the country in 2016 while 4,683 in 2017, 4,695 in 2018, 6,766 in 2019 and 6,220 till October 2020.
It also said a three-member committee, headed by Supreme Court Registrar General M Ali Akbar, has been formed to monitor if the HC order on dispose of the rape case in 120 working days is being implemented.
Responding to the appeal by the state side, the bench of Justice M Mujibur Rahman Mia and Justice Mohiuddin Shamim heard on the matter set May 23 for the order.
On October 13,2020, Supreme Court lawyer Yadia Zaman sent a legal notice to the authorities concerned seeking implementation of HC directives in rape case.
As no steps were taken despite serving the notice, rights group Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking its directives upon the government to announce arbitration over rape incidents as criminal offence.
Advocate Shahinuzzaman Shahin and Advocate Yadia Zaman filed the writ on behalf of the organization.
