Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled, former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank, passed away at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital in the city early Wednesday. He was 80.

He breathed his last at 5:40am at the ICU of the hospital, confirmed Ibrahim Khaled's son Khondkar Sayeed.

The 80-year-old economist was admitted to Bangladesh Specialised Hospital on January 30 last after he was tested positive for COVID-19.

Later on February 21, he was shifted to the BSMMU following deterioration of his condition where he had been on life support.

His body will be taken at Kachikanchar Mela in the capital's Segunbagicha at 11am.

The namaj-e-janaza for the noted economist will be held at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Zohr prayer. He will be laid to eternal rest at his family graveyard in his village home under Sadar Upazila in Gopalganj district.

In a message of condolence, she said, “The contribution of Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled to flourishing the country’s banking sector will be remembered.”

The premier also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Ibrahim Khaled had headed Bangladesh Krishi Bank as chairman and managing director. He had served in Sonali, Agrani and Pubali banks as well in various capacities. He was the deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank from 1998-2001.

Born on July 4, 1941 in Gopalganj, Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled did HSC from Dhaka College. He then earned his graduation and post-graduation degrees in Geography from Dhaka University and then completed an MBA from the Institute of Business Administration under the same institution.
