With the deaths of 17 more people in the last 24 hours until 8:00 am on Wednesday, Bangladesh's COVID-19 death count now stands at 8,072.

During this timeline, 528 fresh cases were reported, taking the total virus cases to 5,33,444.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed the matter through a press release signed by Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General of DGHS, on Wednesday afternoon.

Health authorities also reported 509 more recoveries over the preceding 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 4,77,935.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the country's COVID-19 vaccination programme at Kurmitola General Hospital in the afternoon.

Five frontliners received the vaccine at the inaugural programme.

Runu Veronica Costa, a senior nurse of the hospital is the first vaccine recipient while Prof Dr Nasima Sultana also received the vaccine.

In the last 24 hours, 200 coronavirus testing laboratories across the country collected 15,932 samples and tested 15,720.

With this, a total of 36,00,508 samples were tested in the country.

Among the newly deceased, eight were men and nine were women.

The infection rate is 3.36 per cent in the last 24 hours, compared to the samples tested, while the overall infection rate is 14.82 per cent.

So far, the recovery rate is 89.59 per cent and the mortality rate is 1.51 per cent.

Bangladesh reported its first coronavirus case on March 8 last year and the first death on March 18 the same year.

According to Worldometer's COVID-19 data, the deadly virus has killed 21,69,461 people globally and infected 10,09,21,667 as of today afternoon.
