Widespread violence and clashes among the supporters of rival candidates at  different places in Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) election on Wednesday left two people dead and many injured.

Meanwhile, voting in two polling centres has been postponed on allegations of occupation and vandalising electronic voting machines.

Of the two dead people, Nizam Uddin Munna, was said to be a supporter of Awami League rebel councillor candidate Saber Ahmed,  while Alauddin, son of Sultan Mia of Cumilla district, was pedestrian and caught in the clash. Both the incident took place in Pahartali area in the morning.

Nizam was stabbed to death by his own brother Salauddin Kamrul around 8am, said Pahartoli Police Station OC Rashedul Haque.

Salauddin is the follower of AL-backed councilor candidate Nurul Amin.

OC Rashedul also said that Nizam and Salauddin have previous enmity that might led to the murder.

Alauddin was shot dead in a clash between the supporters of two councillor candidates outside Ambagan Technical School centre under Pahartali ward 13 around 10am.

Eight more people were also injured in the clash ensued between the supporters of Awami League-backed councilor candidate of No 13 Ambagan ward Mohammad Wasim and rebel candidate Mahmudur Rahman.

Meanwhile, the CCC returning officer  Mohammad  Hasanuzzaman postponed voting in two polling centres at ward no. 34 for vandalism and occupying the polling centres.

An EVM machine was damaged at a centre.

Police, however, detained BNP backed councillor candidate Mohammad Ismail Bali in connection with the vandalism.

Chattogram Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner Polash Kanti Nath said incidents of clash took place at a number of polling centres under ward no 34 in Patharghata around 12:15pm.

On the other hand, BNP-backed mayoral candidate  Shahadat Hossain alleged that their party agents have been drove out from all the polling centres.

Voting in the CCC election, which was postponed 10 months ago due to Covid-19 pandemic, began at 8 am on Wednesday.

Seven mayoral candidates, including Awami League's Rezaul Karim Chowdhury (Boat) and BNP's Shahadat Hossain (sheaf of paddy), are contesting the polls.
