Durga Puja ends with Devi's immersion

Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the country's Hindu community, ended on Monday with the immersion of the idols of Goddess Durga in the capital and elsewhere across the country.

Devotees in their tearful eyes bade farewell to the Devi and her children -- Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartik and Ganesh -- through the immersion of their idols in the water.

Formal immersion of the deity started at Bina Smriti Ghat in the capital's Wiseghat around 1:30 pm.

The annual festivities began on October 22 with Mahashashthi puja.

This year, large gatherings were prohibited and puja mandaps were closed after sunset because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Cultural events and the Dhunuchi contest were also suspended.
