Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has unveiled the mystery into the murder of four members of a family at village Kholshi under Kolaroa upazila in Satkhira district.

Raihanul Islam, younger brother of slain Shahinur Rahman, was allegedly involved in the gruesome murders.

The CID said elder brother, sister-in-law, nephew and niece were murdered in a planned way in sequel to family feud. The sharp knife used to slit the throats of the victims was recovered.

"Under the remand, accused Raihanul claimed that he had committed the murders as the devil descended on his shoulder," the CID said, quoting Raihanul.

The CID held a press conference at their Satkhira office on Wednesday afternoon over the unveiling of the mystery behind the murders.

Addressing the press conference, Additional DIG of the Khulna Range of CID, Omar Faruqe said slain Shahinur Rahman's younger brother Raihanul was arrested as a suspect following the brutal four murders. Later, he was interrogated under remand. During the interrogation, he confessed his guilt and narrated the incident in detail.

"Raihanul committed the gruesome murders in sequel to his feud with his brother and sister-in-law," he said.

Omar Faruqe said: "Raihanul Islam didn't do any work. He had no income. His wife left him nine to ten months ago. Since then he had been staying at his elder brother's house. His brother and brother's wife often used to rebuke him over his joblessness. On October 14, his bhabi (sister-in-law) scolded him. She chastised him for his laziness. Hearing these, Raihanul instantly decided to kill his bhabi."

The Khulna Range DIG of CID, said, "Raihanul bought two sleeping pills and two soft drinks (Speed) from two nearby shops in the evening of that day. After returning at home, he mixed the pills with the soft drink. At about 8:30pm, he offered the drink to his Bhabi, nephew and niece. Elder brother Shahinur returned home at about 1:30am from his hatchery. At that time, Raihanul was watching television. Shahinur scolded Raihanul, asking why he watched the television since he couldn't pay the electricity bills. Then he offered the other soft drink to his elder brother mixing sleeping pill with it."

"At that time, Raihanul requested his brother to calm down, and offered him the drink. Then Shahinur drank the soft drink."

"Raihanul entered the bedroom of his elder brother at about 3:00am or 4:00am through the ventilator of the rooftop with a towel. He then hacked his brother with a chapati and strangle him with a gamcha. He also cut the veins of his brother's hands and legs to get confirmed about his death. Then he entered the room of his bhabi and hacked her in the same way with the chapati. At that time, his nephew and niece got awakened hearing the shouts of their mother. Then he murdered the children unwillingly," the CID official said.

Quoting Raihanul, the CID DIG Omar Faruque said, "He had no control over him when he was committing the brutal murders. Raihanul said he had committed the murders as the devil had descended on him."

The chapati used to murder the four members of a family was recovered from a nearby pond, while the towel was seized from Raihanul's room.

"He (Raihanul) claimed that he had committed the murders alone," said the DIG.

On Tuesday, CID arrested Abdur Razzak, 28, son of Abdus Samad, Abdul Malek, 35, son of Abul Kashem, and Asadul Islam, 27--all the residents of the upazila. Razzak and Malek are the neighbours of slain Shahinur, while Asadul is the employee of Shahinur's hatchery. They were produced before court pleading to place on remand.

Regarding the arrested persons, the CID official said investigation goes on though no evidence of their involvement has so far been found. A single person was involved in the murders.

It may be recalled that the throat-slit bodies of four members of a family, including two children, were found in their house at village Kholsi early in the morning on October 15.

The victims were Shahinur Rahman, a 40-year-old fish trader, his wife Sabina Khatun (30), their son Siyam Hossain Mahi (9), and daughter Tasnim (6).

Later, Shahinur's mother-in-law Moyna Begum filed a case with Kalaroa Police Station on that day. The CID was given the responsibility to investigate the case.
