Tigers to play first intra-squad match Friday

Bangladesh national team resumed a bio-secure training camp from Thursday after all cricketers and staff tested negative for Covid-19.

Now, the Tigers will play three intra-squad practice games with the first one taking place on Friday at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Along with the national team, the members of Bangladesh U-19 cricket team, coaching staff and the staff of the team hotel have also been tested for Covid-19 and returned negative.

The Bangladesh team will stay at a Dhaka hotel during this camp while the U-19 team will stay at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) in Savar. Like the national team, they will also play a few intra-squad games at BKSP.

It is the second phase of a bio-secure training camp which will continue for 15 days. On day one of the camp, former captain Mushfiqur Rahim gifted a mask to each of the team members with a printed logo of his foundation. Mushifqur didn’t reveal anything about this initiative.

The first bio-secure camp was set up ahead of the scheduled tour of Sri Lanka which has now been postponed indefinitely.

With the postponement of the Sri Lanka tour, it was confirmed that Bangladesh will pass the remainder of this year without any international game. In this situation, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is more interested in bringing the cricket back at home with domestic events.

“We’re not worried much because of the postponement of the Sri Lanka tour. We’ll now try to host domestic events as soon as possible. We may start with a T20 league. The details plan will be announced soon,” Nazmul Hassan said last week.

Tigers played their last international game back in March this year against Zimbabwe. After that, they were stuck at home for more than five months. The hiatus forced by the Covid-19 ended when a few members of the national team joined an individual training programme before Eid-ul-Azha.

There has been no competitive cricket match in Bangladesh since March as well. The last match played in Bangladesh was in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League. If BCB hosts a T20 league next month, it will mark the end of a long wait for a competitive cricket match in the country.
