Girl raped in Rajshahi church, priest held

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested a priest on charge of violating an indigenous girl after confining her at a church in Tanore upazila of Rajshahi.
RAB-5 members arrested Pradeep Gregory, 50, a priest of Mary Vianni Church, from the Bishop House around 12 midnight on Tuesday.
Earlier, a rape case was filed with Tanore Police Station around 8:30pm.
Confirming the matter, RAB-5 company commander ATM Mainul Islam said the accused was handed over to Tanore police.
Locals and family sources said the minor girl went missing on Saturday morning from near the church where she went to cut grass.
The victim's family filed a general diary the next day as they could not trace out her despite a hectic search.
On information that the girl was kept confined in father Pradeep's room, victim's family members and locals rushed there and rescued her on Monday afternoon.
Pradeep was found guilty in an arbitration that held inside the churhch on Monday night.
Pradeep was then removed from his post and shifted to Rajshahi while the victim was kept with the church nuns.
Being informed by the victim's brother, Tanore Police Station OC Rakibul Hasan and UNO Sushanta Kumar Mahtao rescued the girl from the church on Tuesday evening.
The victim was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital's One-Stop Crisis Centre for medical tests on Wednesday morning.
Father Pradeep was produced before the court after initial interrogation.
