Health Services driver, who owns over Tk 100 crore, arrested

Driver of former Director General of the Directorate of Health Professor Dr Abdul Kalam Azad has been arrested on charges of forged banknote business and extortion.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Abdul Malek, 63, with a foreign made pistol from Kamarpara area under Turag Police Station at about 3:00am on Sunday.
The arrest of Abdul Malek was confirmed by RAB through a press release signed by the elite force's Legal and Media Department's assistant director Sujoy Sarker on Sunday.
The press release reads that RAB learnt by investigation that Abdul Malek was allegedly involved in illegal arms trading, forged bank notes, extortion and other terrorist activities at Turag area in the capital. He created a reign of terror making the common people hostage showing arms and power in his area. Lives of the inhabitants of Turag area have become intolerable due to his activities. People living in his area always remain panicked fearing of him.
In such a situation, RAB arrested Abdul Malek conducting a raid at House No. 42 in Bamoner Tek of Kamarpara under Turag police station. During his arrest, RAB also seized a foreign-made pistol, a magazine, five rounds of bullet, Tk 1.5 lakh fake notes, a laptop and a mobile phone from him.
The press release says that Abdul Malek is a driver of transport pool of the Directorate of Health and a Class III employee. He is Class VIII passed. Malek first joined the Savar Health Project as a driver in 1982. In 1986, he started working as a driver at the transport pool of the Directorate of Health. Now, he works at the Directorate of Health Education on deputation.
There are two seven-storeyed luxury buildings in the name of Abdul Malek's wife. There is also an under construction 10-storeyed building on four katha of land at Hatirpool area in her name. Besides, Malek has a dairy firm on 15-katha of land at Dakkhin Kamarpara. He also has huge amounts of money with different banks.
RAB also learnt that Abdul Malek owns property worth more than Tk 100 crore.
Malek managed to appoint his daughter Nourin Sultana Bely as office assistant at the Directorate of Health, brother Abdul Khaleque as office assistant, elder daughter Baby's husband Ratan as canteen manager, nephew Sohel as driver, brother-in-law Mahbub as driver, and close relative Kamal as office assistant.
Though Malek is a driver of a white Pajero jeep (Dhaka Metro Ga 13-2979) allocated for the Director General, he regularly used it.
It was further learnt that deputy director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Shamsul Alam summoned Abdul Malek to the ACC on October 22 last year for accumulating huge wealth illegally and laundering money abroad through unlimited corruption at the Directorate of Health. However, the ACC could not finish investigation against Malek.
