12 arrested for stealing and changing IMEI numbers of mobile phones


Twelve members of an organised gang have been arrested by Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for their alleged involvement in stealing mobile phones and changing their IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity).

IMEI is a unique number for identifying a device on a mobile network.

CID also recovered 265 stolen mobile phones and nine devices used to change the IMEI numbers.

It was disclosed by Additional DIG of CID Sheikh Mohammad Rezaul Haider while addressing a press conference on Thursday morning in the capital.

He said 12 members of the gang were arrested conducting raids at different parts in the capital.

According to the Additional DIG of CID, there are several such gangs active in the capital. "It often becomes very difficult to find out the stolen mobile phones due to changing of their IMEI numbers. Besides, police face great difficulties while investigating different criminal cases," he said.

He said arrested Murad Khan, 23, and Lavlu Hasan, 20, used to buy mobile phones from thieves in different parts of Dhaka. Then they gave those to arrested Al Amin alias Anik, 22, Bashir Alam Shuvo, 30 and Mim Telecom owner Abdul Malek, 32 for opening the locks and changing the IMEI numbers. They used to change the IMEI numbers using a particular device. Then they used to sell those mobile phones to specific customers at lower prices.

Based on the confession of accused Al Amin, stolen mobile phones and IMEI changing devices were recovered from Mim Telecom owner. The CID also arrested him.

Acting on his confession, the CID later arrested Tamim, 20, Shah Alam, 36, Swapan, 34, Jahangir Alam, 26, Imam Hasan, 22, Arif, 34 and Al Amin, 20. Each of the arrested persons was the member of the organised gang.
