Bridge approach roads collapse in Tangail

TANGAIL, Aug 5: Hit by the strong current of the Louhajang River, the eastern approach road of the Borobasalia Bridge in Sadar Upazila of the district collapsed recently.
It has caused communication disruption in Kuizbari and Gala areas of Sadar Upazila, and Elenga area of Kalihati Upazila.
After construction, the bridge was opened for public on December 1, 2018. Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) built the bridge.
It is an important bridge for Sadar Upazila regional roads.
It links Mogra and Gala unions in Sadar Upazila. It also maintains communication with Elenga of Kalihati Upazila.
Locals said it is normal that flooding will increase water level in the river. But, such a bridge is unnecessary if its approach road collapses within two to three years.
Locals alleged that managing office, the contractor has built the approach road of the bridge with substandard materials. So, it has collapsed.
They demanded to the authorities concerned for repairing the road soon.
Mogra Union Parishad Chairman freedom fighter Azhar Mia said, "We informed the matter to the LGED. We hope that they will take steps to repair the road soon."
Sadar Upazila Engineer of LGED Hedayet Ullah said the road collapsed due to strong current in the river.
He added that the matter was informed to the higher authority.
In another incident, communication between the district headquarters and the western parts of the district has been snapped due to collapse in the approach road of the Charabari Ghat Bridge on the Tangail-Torapganj Road in Sadar Upazila.
Over one lakh people of char areas are suffering much for the collapse in the bridge over the Dhaleshwari River.
The people of Katuli, Hugra, Kakua and Mahmudnagar in char areas of Sadar Upazila and Bharara Union of Nagarpur Upazila use the road daily. The strong current of the river and rain broken the approach road. Though vehicles crossed the bridge amid risk for some days, locals have stopped it.
They have expressed dissatisfaction as no step has been taken yet to check the collapse.
On the other hand, severe erosion has started in Ghoshpara area on the other side of the bridge. Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) dumped 1,000 geo bags at the eroded point. But, as the measure could not check the erosion, steps to dump more 2,000 bags are on.
Locals complained, influential people lift huge sand from the bridge's sides round the year and sell it. So, in every rainy season, erosion happens in nearby areas of the bridge.
Though local administration stops soil lifting sometimes, but after a few days the sand lifting restarts mysteriously. So, the people have to face the erosion threat.
They demanded permanent closure of sand lifting to get rid of the problem.
CNG auto-rickshaw driver Shahin said, though he carried passengers over the bridge for one or two days amid risk, later it became impossible. The basement of the bridge has become highly fragile which may collapse any time.
He also said if the bridge is not repaired immediately, their income will stop.
President of Katuli Union Awami League Nayeb Ali Sarker said, "Soon after the erosion started, local lawmaker Sanowar Hossain visited the affected areas. BWDB is working to stop the erosion by dumping geo bags."
He also said, "I informed the matter to the lawmaker instantly. I hope that he will take quick steps."

Sadar Upazila Chairman Shahjahan Ansari said, "I also informed the matter to the lawmaker and the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED)."
Executive Engineer of Tangail LGED Md Golam Azam said, at present they cannot repair the approach road permanently as the river has swelled. But, they are repairing the road temporarily to keep traffic movement running.
Sanowar Hossain, MP, said, he has ordered BWDB and LGED to take quick measures. Already, work is on to dump 3,000 geo bags at Ghoshpara.
He also gave assurance of repairing the bridge soon.
