2 groups at loggerheads over change of Barishal College's name
A tensed situation has been crated as Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) and Awami Legaue (AL) observed separate programmes in Barishal city on Wednesday in favor and opposing of change of Barishal Government College's name.
BSD Barishal unit organized a human chain in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall in favour of renaming Government Barishal College after Ashwini Kumar Dutta, a Bengali educationist, philanthropist, social reformer and patriot.
BSD member secretary Manisha Chakrabarty, and convener Imran Habib Khan Rumon, among others, were present.
The speaker said it is a legitimate demand that the college should be be renamed after Ashwini Kumar Dutta, as it had been established on his land
Meanwhile, the district Awami League and its associate organizations arranged a mass signature programme and rally at the same venue, demanding to keep unchanged the name of the college.
The city unit AL general secretary Jahangir Kabir and Barisal City Corporation panel mayor Rafiqul Islam, among others, joined the rally.
They said they did not know why the Education Ministry had suddenly taken the initiative to change the name of Government Barishal College to Ashwini Kumar Dutta College. They urged to keep its original name.
On June 29, 2020, the Education Ministry sent a letter to the Barisal Education Board asking for documents in order to rename the college after Ashwini Kumar Dutta.
