700 rock mining workers protest demanding arrears in Dinajpur
More than 700 workers of Maddhyapara Granite Mining Company Limited (MGMCL) at Parbatipur upazila in Dinajpur district staged demonstration on Tuesday to press home their six-point including arrears.
The agitating workers blocked the Mithapukur and Parbatipur highways for one hour to press home their demands. The demonstration started at 11.00am and was called off 12.00pm after getting assurance in this regard from authorities concerned.
The workers are working under Germania Trest Consortium (GTC).
They alleged that GTC closed the company for three months--April, May, June—during this pandemic and assured the workers on paying of salary and allowance. “We are now passing inhuman life without any salary or allowance,” they said.
On June 22, workers’ leaders submitted a memorandum to GTC’s managing director demanding arrears after a protest.
ABM Quamruzzaman, managing director of MGMCL said authorities of the company already discussed the issue with the workers.
The arrears will be paid by the contracted company as early as possible, he added.
