Mayor Atiqul's eldest brother Engr Shafiqul dies

Engineer Md Shafiqul Islam, Managing Director of Islam Garments Limited and Group, died on Monday midnight in the capital. He was 82.
Public Relations Officer of Dhaka North City Corporation ASM Mamun said.
Engineer Shafiqul Islam was the elder brother of Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Md Atiqul Islam.
His namaz-e-janaza was held at Baitul Atiq Mosque after Zohr prayer at Road No. 8 in Baridhara.
He has left behind his wife, two sons and host of well-wishers to mourn his death.
Shafiqul Islam was graduated from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1957 with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and a Master's degree in Structural Engineering in 1965.
He joined government services after graduation and was the project director of Rooppur Nuclear Project. He worked as a consultant engineer for the project for a long time.
He was a fellow member of the Bangladesh Engineering Association.
In 1986, Shafiqul established the garment industry with his younger brother Atiqul Islam. At present, Islam Garments Limited and Group is one of the largest industrial conglomerates in the country.
Shafiqul Islam left behind his wife, brothers and sisters, two sons, grandsons and granddaughters, relatives, friends and well wishers to mourn his death. He was the eldest child of his father Mmataz Uddin Ahmed and mother Mazeda Khatun's 11 children. His three other brothers also established themselves in their respective fields.
His second brother Md Tafazzul Islam was the retired Chief Justice who had delivered final verdict in Bangabandhu murder case. His third brother Lt Gen (Retd) Md Moinul Islam was the founder director-general of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Bangladesh Army's former Chief of General Staff (CGS) and former Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Diviison. His younger brother Md Atiqul Islam is the DNCC Mayor and former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association.
