The government is going to enforce zone-wise lockdown at two area in Dhaka city from Sunday on experimental basis in the wake of growing number of coronavirus infected cases and deaths.
The two areas are Wari in old part of Dhaka city and Rajazar area in Dhanmondi will be put on lockdown from Sunday, said Habibur Rahman, additional secretary of the Ministry of Health, on Saturday.
If this strategy becomes successful, the government will move forward and enforce the strategy across the country on Wednesday.
An app has also been developed in this regard.
The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is piloting the zone-wise lockdown in a ward selected by the Prime Minister's Office after finalising the parameters.
Mirpur's Tolarbagh has been chosen as a model for enforcing the lockdown in other parts of the Dhaka city.
The zoning system is being implemented by DG Health and a2i headed by the deputy commissioner. The DG Health and a2i have developed a software by giving input of data on Covid-19 patients.
They have also used the data and analyses of Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) in their platform to develop the software. But the problem was that many patients did not provide full addresses.
Zones will be declared based on the number of corona cases in each 1,00,000 lakh population in last 14 days from the day of lockdown.
If the number of cases is 40 and above it will be declared a red zone. The yellow zone will have from 15 to 39 cases, while the green zone will be considered if an area has zero to one coronavirus infected case.
The zone-wise lockdown will be enforced for 14 days that may bring down the number of cases as it happened in the case of Tolarbagh.
The area which will be brought under the red zone will remain completely blocked for 14 days. None will be allowed to enter or exist from that area.
However, the essentials which will be required by the inhabitants in the blocked areas will be sent to their doorsteps in time to time.
