Safety rules flouted at passenger launches
BHOLA, June 3: After a gap of more than two months, the commercial operation of passenger launches in the district has been resumed on different routes including that of the Capital Dhaka.
The cheer and chanting were seen on Sunday among passengers for reaching their respective destinations.
Yet, corona contamination is being apprehended as most of the passengers are not careful enough about the officially specified safety rules.
Also, the launch authorities are not fully ensuring the health and hygiene guidelines. In the face of rushing passengers' pressure, launches are leaving terminal before schedule. As a result, the advance ticket holding passengers have been in disarray.
According to local witnesses, Bhola Elisha Launch Ghat became highly crowded in the morning on Sunday. A virtual racy situation took place over who to get boarded first. Usually they got boarded in a haste-spree.
A passenger launch of Adventure Company was due to leave terminal in the morning by 8:30am. But it sailed before the schedule at 7:20am carrying extra passengers. It caused immense of sufferings to those passengers who had collected tickets for Saturday. Disappointed passengers alleged their ticket fares were not returned. Even the mobile phones of the staffs were switched off. Many fell in sufferings accompanying patients.
It was also alleged extra money was realised from common passengers making them hostage in different ways. Many passengers were not conscious about having masks. Some passengers were seen masked but chin-folded.
Cautionary lacking was apparent on behalf of the launch authorities. But they claimed the launches were being operated complying with the order of safety-specified rules.
Yet, Md. Kamruzzaman, assistant director of BIWTA-Bhola, said, "The launches are to carry passengers following the safety rules."
"If someone violates the rules, action shall be taken against them," he assured.
