EU to give 500 million euro to Bangladesh garment workers


European Union (EU) is going to provide a fund worth 500 million euro to support Bangladesh's readymade garment workers who will become jobless and lose income due to the impact of coronavirus pandemic.

Ready-made garment sector leaders said that considering the possible factory lay-off and income loss during the coronavirus outbreak the EU decided to support approximately 10 lakh ready-made garment workers for initially three months beginning from July.

"EU assured that it will provide €500 million to support ready-made garment workers in Bangladesh who will lose their income due impact of coronavirus," Mohammad Hatem, senior vice-president of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association, told journalists on Monday.

BKMEA Director Fazle Shamim Ehsan also confirmed that the EU will provide the fund to disburse among the ready-made garment workers who might loss job or become jobless for three months.

He also said that the support might be extended up to six months depending on the availability of fund and number of workers.

Ehsan said that if any worker loss his or her job due to the factory lay-off and other reasons during the coronavirus outbreak, the workers would get Tk 3,000 per month as an additional supports besides his/her lawful compensation.

He apprehended that many workers might lose their jobs in the ready-made garment sector as manufacturers would be forced to laid-off of reduce capacity due to the lack of work orders during the pandemic.

The apparel sector leaders said that the support fund might cover 10 lakh workers and the BGMEA and BKMEA workers' database will be used in this regard.
