Youth dies after beaten over drugs, gambling in Madaripur
A young man who was reportedly beaten by his cousin for taking drugs in Madaripur district on Tuesday night, succumbed to his injuries at on Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified as Russel Ghormai, 26, a resident of Chapatali village under Sadar upazila.
Locals said Russel along other local youths took drugs and began to play gambling beside an orchard in her house on Tuesday night. At one stage of the game, Russel beat his cousin Jahid along with his cohorts as he asked them not to play gambling.
Later, Jahid along with his relatives came to the spot and beat Russel.
Russel was admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries Wednesday midnight. The deceased’s father lodged a case with Sadar Model Police Station in this connection.
Police have arrested Kamal Ghorami following filing of the case.
Makbul Hossain, cousin of the deceased, said Russel might have killed in a planned way over land dispute not for gambling or drugs. “Anyone can take drugs but you cannot kill him,” he added.
Additional superintendent of police (Sadar Circle) Mohammad Badrul Alam Mollah said they were informed that the deceased took drugs and had a quarrel over gambling.
“We will take steps following our the investigation,” he added.
