Jamuna boat capsize: Death toll rises to 9

The death toll from Tuesday's boat capsize in the River Jamuna of Sirajganj district rose to nine with the recovery of four more bodies on Thursday.

Chauhali UNO Dewan Moudud Ahmed told media that three bodies were retrieved from Khas Kauliar Char and Poylar Char areas in the upazila while another from Sthal Char area under Enayetpur Police Station.

One of the deceased was identified as Alam Mia, son of Noor Mohammad Mia of Singair upazila of Manikganj.

Seven more people are remained missing in the incident.

On Tuesday, an engine boat, carrying 73 passengers, caught by strong wind sank in the Jamuna River in Sthalchar area while heading towards Chauhali from Enayetpur, said Rashedul Islam Biswas, officer-in-charge of Chauhali Police Station.

Police with the help of local people rescued 57 people.

Later, three bodies were recovered the same day while two on Wednesday.
