United Hospital fire: Probe body formed

A four-member committee has been formed to probe Wednesday's fire incident at United Hospital in city's Gulshan  area that left five patients dead.

Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General Brig Gen Sazzad Hossain said the probe body, formed on Wednesday night, has been asked to submit its report within seven working days.

Debashish Vardhan, deputy director of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, will lead the committee. The other members are: Babul Chakraborty, Niaz Ahmed and Md Abul Kalam Azad.

Five patients including an elderly woman burnt alive at the isolation ward of the hospital in a devastating fire that broke out at the hospital's makeshift isolation ward  around 9:15pm.

Fire fighters doused the blaze at about 10:20pm.

Kamrul Islam, duty officer of the Fire Service control room, said they initially suspect an AC explosion caused the fire.
