3 of a family among 4 killed in Joypurhat tree falling

At least four people including three members of a family were killed when a tree fell on their house in Joypurhat district during the storm early Wednesday.

The storm lashed around 40 villages, damaged more than 200 houses and uprooted many trees in the district.

The deceased were identified as Shilpi Begum, wife of Joynal Abdedin, her three-year-old son Niamul Hossain and seven-year-old son NewazMia, residents of Khalishagari village in Khetlal upazila; and Mariam Begum, 70, wife of late Salamat Ali, of Harunja village.

Quoting locals, superintendent of Joypurhat police Salam Kabir said a tree fell onto a house in Khalishagari village at night, injuring Shilpi and her two children.

After the storm ended, locals rushed them to Khetlal Upazila Health Complex.

The elder son died while undergoing treatment at the hospital and, then, his mother and younger brother.

Shilpi’s husband did not receive any injuries as he was at another house during the storm.

Meanwhile, Mariam died at Harunja village at night.

Joypurhat deputy commissioner Mohammad Jakir Hossain said Tk 5,000 was given for the burial of the each deceased and Tk 15,000 more will be donated.
