The broiler chicken which was sold at Tk 200 a kg just one day before Eid is now being sold at Tk 160 per kg in different kitchen markets in the city.
Traders said demand of broiler chicken has declined after Eid. Poultry farm owners are selling their chickens at low prices, because these cannot be kept for long term.
Earlier, the broiler chicken prices had gone down at Tk 110 per kg following the coronavirus pandemic. However, the prices started rising from the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. Subsequently the prices continued to rise and reached at Tk 200 per kg ahead of Eid.
Regarding the price hike ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, traders said the demand of poultry had gone up because of Eid but the supplies had declined. Many of the poultry farm owners did not go for fresh production due to coronavirus pandemic. As a result, the number of poultry chicken has declined. Even, many farms have been shut down. Because of it, the price of poultry chicken had skyrocketed.
While visiting the city's Krishi Market at Mohammadpur on Tuesday, it was observed that poultry chicken was being sold at Tk 160 per kg which was Tk 180-Tk 200 before Eid. Though the price of poultry chicken has down, the prices of red layer and Pakistani cock chicken have remained unchanged.
