Steps to stop Brahmaputra river erosion in Kurigram demanded

Hundreds of villagers formed a human chain along the bank of the Brahmaputra River at Ulipur uapzila in Kurigram district on Sunday demanding necessary steps to stop river erosion.

Villagers of Palervitha and Nilkanta villages formed the human chain at noon. Haider Ali, Ariful Islam, Abu Taleb and Dr Abdul Wahab, among others, spoke on the occasion.

The speakers said about 300 homes and hundreds of hectares of cultivable lands went into the river in last two months.

They also alleged that hundreds of housed under the threat of destruction due to the erosion.

Hatia UP chairman BM Abul Hossain said, “People of this area are losing everything for the river erosion. More than 1,000 of homesteads will be devoured by the river if the administration fails to take proper steps.”

Kurigram WDB executive engineer Ariful Islam said tender approval for river erosion protection in one kilometer area is under process now.

Geo bags will be dumped in the area soon to check the river erosion, he added.
