Re-excavation of Subalang Canal brings new hope in Rangamati
RANGAMATI, Apr 11: People in Juraichhari and Barkal upazilas are dreaming of a new beginning as the re-excavation work in the Subalang canal is going on in full swing under the supervision of Bangladesh Water Development Board.
Locals said they have to suffer a lot due to the sandbars that surface in the canal during the dry season. They have to walk around 12 km to reach the upazila sadar as launches can't reach the area due to poor navigability.
In some cases, people rent engine-driven boats but it is costly and not all can afford it.
According to WDB district office, the 7-km re-excavation project is scheduled to be finished by June this year.
However, Charanjeev Chakma, a representative of the contractor farm Masers Garibe Newaj Enterprise, said they are facing various obstacles from a quarter of people while implementing the project even though the work is moving forward with help of local administration and public representatives.
"Although the length was mentioned as 7km, we have to work on extra three kilometer due to geography of the area and special request from the local administration," he said. -UNB
