Inhabitants of two villages in Joypurhat district on Thursday put themselves on voluntary lockdown to prevent the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

The villages which went for self-lockdown are Paikar Balkapara under Amdai union in Sadar upazila and Bajitpur under Atapur union in Panchbibi upazila.

The villagers said none could leave or enter the villages during this self-imposed lockdown.

They also formed a volunteer committee at each village to monitor the strict enforcement of the lockdown.

The villagers closed down all the entry and exist points into and from their respective villages by putting bamboo-made barricades.

Ahsan Habib, a villager of Paikar Balkapara, said they decided to impose lockdown on themselves for the greater interests of their people after talking to all the inhabitants of the villages.

Everyone is coming forward in need of one another during the lockdown, he added.
