13 fishermen fined in Laxmipur

A mobile court in Laxmipur on Tuesday night fined 13 fishermen for fishing in the Meghna River defeying a government ban.  

Executive magistrate Mohammad Mobarak Hossain, also the Kamalnagar upazila Nirbahi Officer, fined them Tk 3,000.

The upazila fisheries officer Abdul Quddus said the fisheries department and Bangladesh Coast Guard conducted a drive in the river in Char Kalkini area in the upazila and detained 22 fishermen and seized three fishing trawlers. 

However, nine of them were released as they are under 18, he added.

Earlier, the government has banned the catching of fishes of all kinds, including ilish, in the Padma, Meghna Rivers from March 1 to April 30.
