2 killed in Teknaf 'shootout'

Two suspected drug peddlers were killed in a reported gunfight in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar at early hours of Monday.

The deceased were identified as Mahmud Ullah, 26, and Mohammad Mizan, 24 .

The incident took place

Teknaf Model Police Station OC Pradip Kumar Das said police on Sunday morning detained microbus driver Mahmud Ullah with 5,000 Yaba pills in his vehicle.

According to his confessional statement, a team of the law enforcers alongwith Mahmud Ullah conducted a drive in the area to recover more Yaba tablets.

As the team reached in Jhimkhali Prawn Project area at about 1am, Mahmud's cohorts opened fire on the police personnel, forcing them to fire back that triggered a gun-battle.  

At one stage of the shootout, police found bullet-injured Mahmud and Mizan on the scene.

They were first taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex and then shifted to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared them dead.
