British PM invites opposition to join coronavirus talks

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has invited leaders of opposition political parties for emergency talks on how the UK is tackling the coronavirus epidemic.

Johnson invited the opposition leaders to attend a briefing with him, the Chief Medical Officer and the Chief Scientific Adviser next week, report The Telegraph and Mail Online.

The Prime Minister said that at this moment of 'national emergency' he wanted to 'engage constructively' with all parties.

"I have written to all leaders of opposition parties to invite them to work together at this moment of national emergency," Johnson writes on Twitter.

Johnson wrote: "As party leaders we have a duty to work together during this time of national emergency."

In his letter, the Prime Minister said: "I want to listen to your views and update you on the measures we have taken so far, such as rapidly expanding testing and providing economic support to businesses and individuals across the country.

"The Government I lead will act in the national interest at all times and be guided by the best scientific evidence, and of course we will continue to engage constructively with all political parties on the national effort to defeat this pandemic.

"I want to listen to your views and update you on the measures we have taken so far, such as rapidly expanding testing and providing economic support to businesses and individuals across the country."

"I have no doubt that - as we have so many times in the past - the people of the United Kingdom will rise to the current challenge and we will beat coronavirus together."

Newly-elected Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer spoke to Boris Johnson on Saturday afternoon regarding the crisis and accepted the PM's offer to meet next week.

The Department for Health and Social Care has confirmed that the coronavirus death toll in the UK has risen by 708 to 4,313 on Saturday- up from 3,605 on Friday.

Meanwhile, a five-year-old has become the youngest victim to die of coronavirus in England.  The child was among 708 people who have died in the UK over the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 4,313.

A statement from the NHS on the latest deaths in England said: "Patients were aged between five years and 104 years old. Forty of the 637 patients [in England] (aged between 48 and 93 years old) had no known underlying health condition."

The latest figures emerged as  police forces put on extra patrols in parks and outdoor areas, amid fears that large numbers of people will be tempted to go outside and break social distancing rules in the warmer weather.
