Passenger launches to be turned into 'isolation centres'

DHAKA: Passenger motor launches are being prepared to be used as 'isolation centres' for the treatment of coronavirus infected patients.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury stated it after holding a meeting with the motor launch owners at Sadarghat in Dhaka on Saturday.

He said the motor launch owners gave their consent. Necessary steps will be taken after discussing the matter with the Ministry of Health.

Chowdhury said the motor launches are being turned into isolation centres to provide treatment to the coronavirus patients living at coastal areas where the treatment facilities have not yet reached.

Adequate security measures will be taken and the launches will be taken to a safe place after discussion at the cabinet, he said.

Later, the state minister distributed food among the ghat labourers at Sadarghat.

Shipping Ministry Secretary Mohammad Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury, Director General of Department of Shipping Commodore Syed Ariful Islam, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Chairman Commodore Golam Sadeq, Launch Owner Samity Vice-President Shahidul Islam Bhaiya, among others, were present.
