RAJSHAHI: Five hungry stray dogs have consumed four deer alive at Shaheed AHM Qamaruzzaman Central Park and Zoo here on Friday morning.
In order to conceal the incident, the remains of the bodies of deer were buried. Three of the deer consumed by the dogs were calves, while the rest one was their mother.
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) supervises the zoo. RCC executive magistrate Samar Kumar Pal said 15 deer calves were born during the last three months. There were 75 deer under the shed. After consumed by the dogs, the number of deer has stood at 71.
He said labourers worked beside the shed till 2 o'clock on Thursday night. Most of the employees were on leave due to coronavirus. So, the shed of the deer was not properly monitored and supervised. At the dead of night, five hungry dogs entered the shed. Perhaps, the dogs became hungry and violent finding no food due to coronavirus lockdown.
Pal said labourers went to the shed early in the morning and found five dogs roaming there. They saw the remains of five deer lying on the ground. Immediately, the RCC authorities were informed about the matter.
The RCC executive magistrate denied any attempt to conceal the matter. "It was just an accident. I think that the hungry dogs first attacked the calves. As their mother went to save them, she also came under attack. The superviser of the zoo has been asked to submit a written report investigating the incident. We expect to get the report in a day or two. Then we will take decision," he said.
