Man killed in 'police firing' in Dinajpur

A betel leaf seller was killed and 15 workers were injured after police fired gunshots and charged batons on protesting 'Rupali Jute Mills' workers in Birol upazila of Dinajpur district on Wednesday night.
Deceased Surat Ali, 40, was a resident of Husna village under Biral municipality in the upazila.
Locals said on information that the jute mill will be closed due to coronavirus outbreak, workers started demonstration in front of it on Wednesday afternoon demanding their due wages.
The mill authorities offered the workers to pay only five day's salary but the workers demanded their full dues before closure of the mill.
The authorities announced that they will not pay any dues that made the workers angered and they started vandalising the mills.
On information, police rushed to the spot and opened gunshots and charged batons on the workers to bring the situation under control.
During police intervention, Surat Ali sustained bullet injuries and died on the spot while 15 others were also injured.
Of them, two bullet-wounded workers was admitted to Birol Health Complex while another to M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital.
Confirming the death, Birol police station Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Nasim Habib said the situation is now under control.
