BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is likely to be released shortly as the government has suspended her jail term for six months on humanitarian ground in view of her age.
It was stated by Law Minister Anisul Huq while addressing a press briefing at his Gulshan residence in Dhaka at about 3:30pm on Tuesday.
However, she would not be allowed to visit abroad during the period.
Besides, Khaleda Zia would have to receive treatment staying at her house at Gulshan in Dhaka, the Law Minister further said.
The BNP Chairperson's jail term was suspended for six months according to the Section 401 of Bangladesh Penal Code, the minister also said.
Replying to a question, Anisul Huq said the home ministry will take decision about the timing of her release.
The BNP chief landed in jail after being sentenced to five years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case by a special court on February 8, 2017.
On October 30, 2018, the High Court enhanced her punishment to 10 years in the case after dismissing her appeal.
On October 29, 2018, Khaleda Zia was convicted in Zia Charitable Trust corruption case and sentenced to seven years' rigorous imprisonment by another special court in her absence.
Khaleda Zia, now 74-year old, is undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University at Shahbagh in Dhaka as she has been suffering from various old-age complications.
