6 get life term in gang rape case
A court in Sirajganj on Thursday convicted six people and sentenced them to life term imprisonment in a case filed over gang rape of a young girl in 2016.
The lifers are: Md Russel alias Rabiul, 25, Nazmul, 24, Nur Islam, 26, and Momin,, 34, of Panchil village, and Sohel, 26, and Razzaque, 44, of Bhatpiari, in Sadar upazila. Of the convicts, Sohel and Momin are on the run.
Sirajganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Fazle Khoda Md Nazir handed down the verdict.
The court also fined them Tk 1 lakh each and asked the district deputy commissioner to sell the movable and immovable property of the convict and pay to the victim.
According to the prosecution, Russel had developed an affair with the daughter, aged about 18, of one Abu Sayeed of Bhatpiari.
He called the girl over mobile phone to Bhatpiari Char on April 21, 2016 and then Russel and his friends-- Razzaq, Nazmul, Nurul and Shohel-- gang raped the girl there.
They left the girl in a sugarcane field as she fell sick and lost her consciousness.
Convict Momin also raped the girl the next day while she was returning home from the scene.
Family members rescued the girl and admitted her to Sirajganj Genreal Hospital.
The victim's brother lodged a case with Sirajganj Sadar Police Station in this connection.
Later, police submitted a charge sheet accusing the six.
The tribunal assistant public prosecutor Sheikh Abdul Hamid Lablu confirmed the matter.
