UNHCR Special Envoy and Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie has highly appreciated Bangladesh for the generosity and leadership it demonstrated in dealing with the Rohingya crisis.

In a recent letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the famous Hollywood actress appreciated Bangladesh for giving shelter to the Rohingyas and ensuring their safety and security, reports UNB.

During her visit to Bangladesh in February last year, she said the world must not turn away from the nearly one million Rohingyas who have fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh.

She urged continued support for those who have been displaced, until the Myanmar authorities show the genuine commitment needed to end a decades-long cycle of violence and displacement.

In her letter, the Special Envoy mentioned in the letter that UNHCR would continue its efforts to engage with Myanmar to create suitable conditions for the sustainable return of the Rohingyas.

Bangladesh is currently hosting more than 1.1 million Rohingyas. Most of them fled their homes in Myanmar’s Rakhine State after the military launched a brutal offensive targeting the mainly Muslim ethnic minority in late August 2017, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.

The UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador hoped that Bangladesh’s initiatives for the Rohingyas would help to get better funding for the 2020 Joint Response Plan for the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis which would be launched in March in Geneva.

She committed to continue her advocacy for the humanitarian response for the Rohingyas and expressed gratefulness to the people of Bangladesh for all kinds of support.

Angelina Jolie visited Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar in February last year in her capacity as UNHCR Special Envoy.

The Special Envoy focuses on major forced displacement crises, representing UNHCR and the High Commissioner at the diplomatic level.

Jolie also met with forcibly displaced Rohingya people during a prior visit to Myanmar in July 2015 and in India in November 2006.
