Woman dies in police custody

A woman was found dead in police custody on Tuesday night, hours after Gazipur Detective Branch Police detained her for possessing drugs.
The deceased is identified as Yasmin Begum,40, wife Abdul Hye, a resident in Bhawal Gazipur area under Gazipur city.
Family alleged the woman was tortured to death in custody. But, police denied the allegation and claimed that she died of heart attack.
Meanwhile, Gazipur Metropolitan Police formed a three-member committee to probe the death.
Yasmin's son Arafat Rahman Jisan told media that a team of police, led by DB ASI Noor-e-Alam, raided their house on Tuesday evening to arrest his father in a drug case.
"As they (DB men) did not get my father, they broke open the collapsible gate and entered the house. They also slapped my mother and picked her up," said Jisan.
"Later at 11pm, police informed us over phone that my mother was sick and being taken to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital (STAMCH). We rushed there at 1am, but did not see my mother alive. Her body bore several injury marks," he added.
Manjur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan DB, police arrested Yasmin Begum with 120 Yaba tablets on Tuesday night. She fell sick at the 'hajat' and soon sent to hospital.
He also claimed that Yasmin's entire family involved with drug trading. Earlier, RAB and police arrested some of the family members with drugs.
STAMCH resident medical officer Rafiqul Islam said DB police brought Yasmin Begum at 10pm with chest pain and breathing problem.
"She was referred to a Dhaka hospital. But, she died at 11:20pm," he said.
