City University fined Tk 10 lakh

The Appellate Division on Wednesday fined City University Tk 10 lakh for enrolling students in its Law department beyond the approved limit set by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The four-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order.

The court also asked the varsity authorities to pay the fine money to Bangladesh Bar Council.

As per the court order, the university will have to pay the money from its own fund. It will not be allowed anymore to take this money from the students.

Earlier, some 25 students of the university filed a writ to take part in the Bangladesh Bar Council examination.

Following the writ, the High Court on October 24, 2019, issued a rule asking the varsity authorities to give the students registration cards so that they will appear in the exam.

The Bar Council, later,  filed three leave to appeal petitions with the SC challenging the HC directives.
