5 drown, 3 missing in Rangamati vessels capsize

Five people drowned and three children went missing in separate vessel accidents in Rangamati on Friday.

Rangamati district police sources said a tourist carrying launch sank in Kaptai Lake near Rangamati DC Bungalow at noon.

So far, five bodies have been recovered from the spot.

Among the deceased, four were identified as Rina Akhter, 32, Shila Akhter, 27, Asma Akhter, 22, and Afroza Akhter, 14.

Rakibul Islam, one passenger of the launch, said 17 workers of Pacific Jeans, Chattogram hired an engine boat to travel the lake in the morning.

The boat sank suddenly during their trip, he added.

Another passenger Md Hasan said they came to Rangamati to celebrate the Pahela Falgun.

We lost the near and dear ones in the accident, he added.

Meanwhile, three people including two children went missing when a boat with 53 members of ISKCON on board capsized in Kalar depot area in the Karnaphuli River.

The missing persons are: Tumpa Majumder,30, Binoy,5, and Deblila,10.

Some of the injured were taken to Sadar Hospital.

A search and rescue operation is going on at the spot.
