Five members of a family, including a minor girl, were burnt alive in a fire that broke out at a building on Saifur Rahman Road of Moulvibazar district town on Tuesday morning.

The fire originated at 'Pinky Shoe Store', housed on the ground floor of a two-storey building, at about 10am and soon spread to the first floor where the shoe store owner was residing, said local sources.

On information, two fire fighting units rushed to the scene and tried to douse the blaze. Later, three other units from Sreemangal joined them and brought the fire under control at 12 noon, said Moulvibazar Fire Service and Civil Defence fireman Sahan Kumar.

After taking control of the blaze, Fire Service and Civil Defence members recovered five charred bodies from the first floor of the building where the family got stuck.

The bodies were sent to a local hospital morgue.

The deceased were identified as the shoe store owner Subhash Roy, 65, his daughter Priya Roy, 19, his sisters-in-law Dipti Roy, 48, and Dipa Roy, 35, and Dipa's daughter Baishakhi Roy, 3.
