An unidentified drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with the members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar early Friday.

The BGB-2 Battalion commanding officer Lt Col Mohammad Faisal Hasan Khan said on information that a consignment of Yaba tablets was being smuggled into the country, a BGB patrol team took position in Jadimura area.

During their patrol in the area, the team challenged some persons, carrying sacks on their heads. But the men opened fire on the BGB members, leaving lance nayek Nurul Amin, 27 and soldier Shahinur Islam, 25, injured.

The BGB members also fired back in self-defence that triggered a gunfight.

After the gunfight, the BGB recovered the man's bullet-hit body, the BGB official said.

However, the BGB members recovered 1.3 lakh Yaba tablets, a locally made gun and a bullet from the spot, he added.
