'Police can't avoid liability of death in custody'

'Police can't avoid liability of death in custody'

Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam has said police can not avoid liability of death of an accused under police custody.

The DMP commissioner came up with this comment in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhanmondi Road No 32 after placing wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu on Monday.

"Primarily, we knew that accused Abu Bakr, 45, committed suicide by hanging himself in jail of Tejgaon Industrial Are Police Station. But I asked DC to form a committee to investigate the incident. Because, we can not avoid the liability if any accused commit suicide or die in jail. Action will be taken if there is found negligence of any officials," said Shafiqul Islam.

He also said, "It is our foremost duty to give security to a man when he is under our custody."
