8 hurt in Meghna launch collision

Eight people, including four children, were injured in a collision between two launches in the Meghna River in Chandpur on Thursday night.

Of the injured, five were identified as Mohiuddin, 10, Foyzul, 12, Masum, 26, Russel, 15, Md Tarek, 11, and Abu Taher, 25. They all hail from Hizla upazila in Barishal .

Injured passengers said Pirojpur-bound launch 'MV Tipu-12' hit hard MV Aulad-4' bound for Dhaka while crossing each other in Alur Bazar area around 11: 00 pm, leaving eight passengers of the latter vessel injured.

The injured were rushed to Chandpur by a trawler.

Later, Mohiuddin was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical condition while the others were admitted to Chandpur Sadar General Hospital.

Chandpur river police sub-inspector Ilyas said on information, police and fire service personnel rushed to Chandpur launch terminal and requested the two vessels to anchor there. But both vessels left for their destinations.

Legal actions will be taken after investigation, he added.
