Boy takes poison for not getting smartphone

A boy on Monday night tried to kill himself by taking poison in Bakal union under Agailjhara upazila of Barishal as his family did not buy him a smartphone.

The boy is identified as Rabiul Islam, a Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinee from Agailjhara Bhegai Halder Public Academy. He is the son of Abul Kashem Fakir of Phulshri village in the union.

Family members said Rabiul demanded a smartphone from his father. As they did not buy one for him, the boy tried to kill himself at night by taking poison.

Meanwhile, Hafiza Akter, daughter of Shahin Talukder of the union, a ninth grader at Paisa Secondary School, also took poison at night after a quarrel with her sister-in-law.

They were rushed to Agailjhara Upazila Health Complex.
