A woman and her son were killed and eight others were injured when a launch hit another one on the Meghna River at Majherchar point in Hijla upazila of Barishal early Monday.

The deceased were identified as Mahmuda Khatun, 25, wife of Rubel Hossain and their son Momin, 6, hailed from Bakerganj upazila of Barishal.

Hijla Police station officer in-charge Ashim Kumar Sarker said a Dhaka-bound Farhan-9 launch carrying over 500 passengers hit Kirtankhola-10 around 1:30am, leaving the duo dead on the spot and eight others injured.

Ajmal Huda Mithu, deputy director of Bangladesh inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), said the accident occurred due to dense fog.

Pirojpur Sadar Police Station officer in-charge Md Nurul Islam said two staffs of Farhan-9  were detained in this connection.

BIWTA formed a four-member probe committee and asked them to submit report within seven days.

UNB adds: Police recovered the bodies after Kirtankhola-10 reached Sadarghat Launch Terminal, said Rezaul Karim Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Sadarghat River Police Thana.
