Zahangir, Sadik Abdullah, new Barishal city AL Prez, Gen Secy
BARISHAL Dec 9: The triennial council of Barisal city unit of Awami League was held after 7 years at Bangabandhu Uddyan on Sunday noon.
In the council, present General Secretary Adv AK M Zahangir was selected President while incumbent Joint Secretary and Barishal City Corporation (BCC) Mayor Serniabat Sadik Abdullah was named General Secretary in the newly announced committee held at Barishal Club.
In his speech as chief guest Obaidul Quader said, "We have no need for opportunists and evildoers. They eat up all our developments and achievements like worms."
Awami Legue is the organisation of self-sacrificing, dedicated workers and leaders. Drug peddlers, terrorists, corrupt persons have no room in this party," he said.
"Winter birds come in good times but go away during crisis. We have no need for such kind of winter birds" he added.
Quader said, "Leadership cannot be achieved by posturing, setting up billboards and banners with photos. It can be gained only by winning over the hearts of the people."
About BNP he said, "They failed both in waging a movement and in election and turned into an organisation of complainers."
"People is our power and source of strength and we have to unitedly face all conspiracies," he added.
Before that, AL Advisory Board member Amir Hossain Amu inaugurated the council.
Abul Hasanat Abdullah, District AL President delivered keynote speech.
At the council, AL Joint General Secretary Abdur Rahman Organising Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Law Secretary and Minister SM Rejaul Karim, International Secretary Dr Shammi Akhter addressed the council, while Adv Golam Abbas Chowdhury presided over the council.
The last council of the units were held in 2012.
