The Pure Food Court has directed to withdraw popular 'Hakimpuri Zarda' from markets across the country considering it harmful for public health.
The court on Monday asked the producer company, and Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) to recall the product from markets.
Earlier BFSA inspector Kamrul Hasan today lodged a case with Pure Food Court against the product producer company.
Inspector Kamrul said BFSA has recently collected different types of zarda, a smokeless tobacco, in two phases and tested these in lab where it was seen that the products contain heavy metal like lead, cadmium and chromium.
"Consuming zarda can cause kidney disease, and cancer in mouth, lungs and throat. So, taking the matter into account, I filed the case under section 23, 24 and 31 of Bangladesh Food Safety Authority," the official added.
Pure Food Court judge Mehedi Pavel Sweet took the case into account and set December 31 for next hearing.
Alongside, the court asked Food Safety Authority and company concerned to remove the Hakimpuri Zarda from markets.
