By-poll To Ctg-8 Seat
Potential party candidates buying nomination papers
CHATTOGRAM Dec 8: Potential candidates of political parties, especially the ruling grand alliance, have started collecting nomination papers for the by-poll to Chattogram-8 parliamentary seat.
The seat fell vacant after the death of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal leader Moinuddin Khan Badal who died during treatment in a hospital in India on November 7.
The by-poll is scheduled to be held on January 13 next.
Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu of Jatiya Party is seeking nomination for the seat.
Talking to the Daily Observer, Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu of Jatiya Party said, "I have collected nomination paper from the Election Commission office on Sunday."
He also said that his party had nominated him for the Chattogram-8 seat of Parliament.
"I am optimistic of having nominations from the grand alliance as an active partner of the alliance," he claimed.
Meanwhile, a dozen of Awami League leaders are also seeking the nominations from the same seat.
A total of 12 leaders of Awami League collected the nomination papers from the Party office.
They include Muslemuddin Ahmed, President of Chattogram District South AL, Selina Khan Badal, wife of the deceased MP Mainuddin Khan Badal, Abdul Kader Sujan, Abdus Salam former Chairman of CDA and SM Abu Tayyib.
When contacted, Muslemuddin Ahmed, President of Chattogram South Awami League told the Daily Observer that he was optimistic of obtaining the party ticket for the election for the Ctg-8 constituency.
He is also sanguine of victory in the by elections.
Meanwhile, BNP has a lone candidate for the seat. Abu Sufian, Convenor of the
Chattogram district South unit of BNP, is the lone candidate for the Chattogram-8 parliamentary constituency containing Boalkhali and Chandgaon thanas of the district.
Abu Sufian contested in the previous General elections from the same seat.
According to BNP insiders, if BNP participates in the by-polls, Abu Sufian is the lone candidate from the party.
Talking to the Daily Observer, Abu Sufian of BNP said, "I am the lone aspirant for the by-polls in Ctg-8 seat. I am optimistic of getting the nominations from the party."
Abu Sufian also confirmed that his party would contest in the by elections.
When contacted the Deputy Election officer Munir Hussain Khan told the Daily Observer, a total of eight persons had collected nomination papers from the EC office since Sunday.
He said the last date for collection of nominations from the EC office is December 12.
The scrutiny of nominations will end on December 14 while the last date for withdrawing candidature is December 22.
Electronic Voting Machine or EVM will be used to cast ballots at the election. Polls to the constituency will open at 9am and will close at 5pm.
The total number of voters in the constituency is 4, 75,996 - 2, 41,922 male and 2, 34,074 female voters.
