Punishment in ‘Silent Zone’ from Dec 17

The punishment for honking horns in the 'No horn zone' around the Secretariat will come into effect on December 17 next.
The government has declared surrounding areas of the Secretariat, Zero Point, Paltan, Kadam Fountain, Shiksha Bhaban as 'No horn zone' aiming to prevent sound pollution.
According to the article 8(2) of the noise pollution (control) rules 2006 of Environment Conservation Act 1995, if anyone honks horn in the silent zone defying the rules, the person will have to serve one month in jail or be fined Tk 5000 or both.
On November 25, the decision came from a meeting, presided over by Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin.
An inter-ministerial meeting was held on Sunday at Environmental ministry to discuss the implementation of the silent zone.
Billal Hossain, additional secretary of the ministry, said rule violators will be brought under the book for honking horn in the silent zone. Mobile courts and other agencies will conduct drives, he added.
A decision has been taken in the meeting to campaign through television channels, facebook and mobile SMS to create awareness against sound pollution.
