AL factions scuffle at Ctg north unit council

CHATTOGRAM Dec 7: The council of Chattogram district North Unit has begun on Saturday amidst scuffle between two factions of the party.
Supporters of Gias Uddin, former upazila chairman of Mirsarai upazila, and
Ataur Rahman Ata, former president of Awami League's Mirsarai upazila unit, scuffled and hurled plastic chairs at each other at the venue at Laldighi Maidan.
But the incident did not hamper the council which went ahead as scheduled.
Md Mohsin, officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station told the Daily Observer that the situation did not get out of hand. The central leaders started arriving at the venue after the fracas ended.
Awami League Presidium Member and former president of the Chattogram north unit Mosharraf Hossain inaugurated the triennial council around 11:00 am.
AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader was present as the chief guest. AL Joint General Secretary (central) Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Organising Secretary Enamul Haque Shamim and Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Naoufel, Deputy Publicity Secretary Aminul Islam Amin, Deputy Office Secretary Biplob Barua, central leader Abdul Matin Khashru, Chattogram Zila Parishad Chairman MA Salam, local leaders and members of parliament were present.
Awami League activists have elected MA Salam and Sheikh Ataur Rahman Ata as the president and the general secretary of the party's Chattogram district north unit.
Salam was the general secretary of the previous committee while Ata is a former president of the Awami League's Mirsarai upazila wing
They have defeated MP ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury and Gias Uddin, a former chairman of Mirsarai upazila council.
AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader announced the results in the evening after as many as 353 activists voted at the council of the unit.
