The government has decided to reduce the price of diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizer, a non-urea fertilizer, to Tk16 from Tk 25 per kg for farmers.
The decision will come into effect soon, Agriculture Minister Mohammad Abdur Razzaque said at a press conference at the Secretariat on Wednesday.
The government has also reduced the price of DAP fertilizer to Tk 14 from Tk 23 per kg for the dealers.
Razzaque said, "The decision was taken to reduce the production cost of farmers as they are not getting proper price of their crops."
He said the government will have to bear a Tk 8,00 crore subsidy this fiscal year due to cut in DAP fertilizer price.
"The government is now giving Tk 24 subsidy on per kg of non-urea fertilizer while Tk 13 on per kg of urea. At least Tk 7,000 crore in subsidy is given only for fertilizer," Razzaque said.
Bangladesh's farmers are habituated to use of urea fertilizer, the minister said, adding that excessive use of urea only help for vegetative growth which invites insects.
"We are encouraging farmers to use non-urea fertilizer instead of urea. There are same ingredients in DAP and TSP like urea fertilizer. Rather, use of non-urea fertilizer is good for health of the soil" Razzaque, also an agronomist, said.
"The farmers face shortage of workers during plantation and harvest seasons. Even, high labour cost increases the production cost and farmers get deprived of fair price. So, the government has decided to give subsidy to farmers to buy harvesting machines," the agriculture
He said they have sought Tk 4,000 crore to mechanise the agricultural sector and a proposal in this regard has already been sent to the Planning Commission for approval.
Among others, agriculture Secretary Md Nasiruzzaman and concerned departmental heads were present during press briefing.
