Tomato cultivation decreases at Godagari
RAJSHAHI, Dec 4: Tomato farming in Godagari Upazila of the district has decreased this year as the farmers are not getting expected price in local markets.
The upazila, where tomato was cultivated the most, is now gradually losing the fame, as many farmers turned themselves away from tomato cultivation.
Godagari Agriculture Office sources said 2,250 hectares of land have been brought under tomato farming in the upazila this year, and it was 2,650 ha last year.
Growers blamed that the reason behind the decrease in tomato farming is lack of fair price in the market.
Farmer Mahmud Islam of Bogdamari Village in the upazila said, "Last year, I cultivated tomato on four bighas of land. I was greatly affected by cultivating tomato due to price fall. So, this time I will cultivate tomato in two-bigha land."
Piarul Islam of Raninagar Village said he has not cultivated tomato this time due to repeated losses.
Godagari Upazila Agriculture Officer Shafiqul Islam said his department is working on the issue to encourage farmers in tomato cultivation.
